Pattern recognition practice: a clear solving routine

Pattern questions become easier to inspect when you stop treating the picture as one object. Break it into properties, test one candidate rule and keep only the explanation that predicts the next step.

Look for four common pattern families

Many tasks use repetition, alternation, progression or combination. A feature may repeat every third frame, switch between two states, increase step by step or combine information from earlier frames.

Check the outer shape and inner marks separately. They can follow independent rules that meet only in the missing panel.

Measure change rather than appearance

Ask what happened between frames: one dot added, a line moved clockwise, fill inverted or two elements exchanged positions. Describing the change produces a testable rule.

If the amount of change grows, write the step sizes mentally. A sequence of one, two and three movements suggests what should happen next.

Use elimination deliberately

An option can be wrong because of count, orientation, fill or position. Cross out the clearest contradictions first and compare the remaining choices against every part of the rule.

Avoid choosing an option only because it looks visually balanced. Pattern tasks reward consistency with the transformation, not beauty or symmetry unless symmetry is explicitly the rule.
