What you will learn

By the end, you can put a food chain in order and say who is the producer, the prey and the predator.

In the garden, a lettuce leaf has a big hole in it. A snail sits nearby, full and slow. On the fence, a thrush is watching the snail. Nobody planned it, but you are looking at a food chain.

Read the explanation

A food chain shows who eats whom. It starts with a plant, because plants make their own food using sunlight: they are producers. Animals are consumers: they eat plants or other animals. The arrow points to the eater and means "is eaten by".

  • A predator hunts and eats other animals: its prey.
  • A habitat is where a living thing finds food, water and shelter: a pond, a hedge, a log.
  • One animal can be prey and predator at the same time.
