What you will learn

By the end, you can explain why shadows form and change size, and what makes a sound louder or higher.

Rain drums on the tent. Sana switches on the torch and makes a rabbit with her fingers. On the wall the rabbit is huge; move her hand away from the torch and it shrinks. Outside, the rain gets louder, then softer.

Read the explanation

Light from a source, such as the Sun or a torch, travels in straight lines. We see things when light bounces off them into our eyes. An object that blocks light leaves a dark space behind it: a shadow. Sound is a vibration that travels through the air to your ear.

  • Dark is simply the absence of light.
  • Bigger vibrations are louder; faster vibrations are higher.
