What you will learn

By the end, you can name solids, liquids and gases, and say what happens when they warm up or cool down.

Ana leaves an ice cube on a plate in the sun. An hour later it is a puddle. By evening the plate is dry. The ice did not disappear: it changed state twice.

Read the explanation

Everything is a solid, a liquid or a gas. A solid keeps its shape. A liquid flows and takes the shape of its container. A gas spreads out to fill its space. Heating and cooling change one state into another.

  • Heat: ice melts to water; water evaporates to invisible water vapour.
  • Cold: water vapour condenses to drops; water freezes to ice.
  • Water freezes at 0 °C and boils at 100 °C.
