A decimal point separates whole numbers from parts of a whole. The first digit after the point counts tenths (0.1 is one tenth). The second digit counts hundredths (0.01 is one hundredth). So 2.35 is 2 ones, 3 tenths and 5 hundredths.
- Ten hundredths make one tenth, so 0.10 is the same as 0.1.
- To compare decimals, compare the tenths first: 0.4 is bigger than 0.35.
- To add decimals, line up the decimal points and add column by column.
