Ana sells apples at the market. She has 3 crates of 100, 4 bags of 10 and 2 loose apples on the table. She never counts them one by one: she just reads the number 342.
Read the explanation
Every digit has a place, and the place tells you what it is worth. In 342, the 3 is in the hundreds place (300), the 4 is in the tens place (40) and the 2 is in the ones place (2). A zero keeps a place empty so the other digits stay in the right columns.
- Hundreds are worth 100 each, tens 10 each, ones 1 each.
- The 5 in 500 is not the 5 in 50: the place changes the value.
- To order numbers, compare the hundreds first, then the tens, then the ones.
