By the end, you can tell a turned shape from a flipped shape and pick the picture that shows a quarter, half or three-quarter turn.
Rui’s robot copies dance moves from picture cards. Rui turns a card a quarter turn, and the robot still gets the move right. Then Rui holds a card up to a mirror, and the robot does the move backwards! Turning a shape and flipping a shape are not the same thing.

A rotation turns a shape around a point, like spinning a card on a table. A quarter turn is 90°, a half turn is 180° and a full turn brings the shape back to the start. A reflection flips the shape over, like a mirror image, and you cannot spin a mirror image back to the original. To check, imagine the shape on a table: if you would have to lift it and turn it over to match, it was flipped.
- Turn = spin around a point. Quarter turn 90°, half turn 180°.
- Flip = mirror image. Left and right swap places.
- Test it: could you spin the shape on the table to match? If yes, it is a turn.
